The best hot dogs I've ever had were all from Chicago - both red and brown. For some reason the folks up there are good with meats. Also the toppings are the best. Bright green relish, cucumbers, tomatoes, sport peppers, pickle....

I think the red one’s will kill you quickest.

May or May not kill you the quickest, but damn sure the fastest way for a prolific gout attack.

The mayo thing? The hotdog/sausage purists say 'no mayo' on them. I say everyone's palates are different; if you like it, then do it.

I grew up eating the fried red dogs at Bill's in 'little Washington'. The line out the door used to stretch all the way to the waterfront. There is just something wholesome about a hotdog joint with a screen door. But they have changed something in the chili recently and they are just not that great anymore. I now go to Warren's in Chocowinity, which is a blatant knockoff, but is now much closer to the original recipe/flavor. And if you are not familiar with either, their chili does not have meat. It is more like a white pepper roux, and is both spicy and (to many) delicious. But it seems like you either love it or hate it; there is no in between.

In Raleigh, there is a place called "Cloo's Coney Island" over in Mission Valley/Avent Ferry Road that makes all sorts of regional designer dogs. And they are really, really good. Or they were the last time I was there a year or so ago.

Grew up in NC, and never could stand those nasty dyed red hotdogs. If you've got to color the meat to sell it, it was never fit to eat to begin with.
Pure sacrilege!!!!

I just called the non-emergent hot line about this…. She told me to hang up…….

And call the 911 emergency line!!

Hahaha

I used to love buying these at a gas station! Eat the dog, then drink the teaspoon of vinegar out of the sleeve.

When I was on active duty, at Camp Lejeune, I got in the habit of eating 4 or 5 of these a day. One day my poic pulled me aside and ordered me to stop eating them because nobody wanted to ride in the GOV with me because I constantly smelled like garlic and vinegar. He said it was oozing out of my pores...

Hahaha! I haven't had one in years and now I'm afraid to eat one because I know I'll fall right off the wagon and end up having a hotdog heart attack...

those hot sausages are like crack! Family would by them in the giant jars, like on the counter at a gas station!

Those big mama’s are the deal!

Seriously, no experienced dog or sausage eater would consider those crappy red things as worthy of any respect. I’m sure there is some small place somewhere in the south turning out great dogs, brats or sausages. But the Midwest and NY have tons pf great options in that area. It is about equal to claiming NY whole hog cooking is as good as NC‘s. That would be just dumb. Or maybe Nebraska has great seafood. Yeah, sure.

I think it's because some people think a hot dog has to look as close to a red rocket as possible before they'll consider eating it.

It's like they don't know hot dogs aren't really made from dogs.

Well… I was out shopping today, in a hurry and hungry… because of all the talk on this thread… picked up a hotdog…. From Sam’s Club…

FAIL!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like you should have sprung for the rotisserie chicken.
Haha! There was a line across the back of the store of folks waiting for one.. it’s nuts during the Xmas season. Next time the pizza slice MAY be a better option. Thinking about making my way over to shorty’s in Wake Forest, tomorrow, to help right today’s wrong.

For you non red hotdog eatin types out there (per the poll there’s at least 24 of you!) check out those brown bright leaf smoked sausage in my last pic… so guuud. Roast those piggies on top of cut up potstickers, peppers and onions, mixed with olive oil and yer favorite seasoning for 45 min at 400’. Yessir!

where’s the rest of the fixings?
This was just a quick fix, as I was Jones’n… wait .. Bright Leaf’n.

Will fix the rest on the grill tomorrow and will load’em up … All the Way (mustard, chili, onion, slaw)! Heavy on the toppings, so you have to kind of hunch over your plate to avoid a topping avalanche in yer lap!

This is a hot dog joint. 😜

Looks like a good thing going on here. Wish they were closer!

A: Bright Leaf Red Hot Dogs!!

And maybe the homemade egg rolls!! Excellent!

Crickets Grill on downtown Smithfield. Had four dogs and four egg rolls. So good! Only $1.15 a dog and $2.50 for two egg rolls.

This place is packed like this all day.

FYI… cash only if you decide to go.
