Revolver Picture Thread

I took an old friend out for a little shooting today, M29-3. Got it wiped down and ready for another day.

Just picked up this inexpensive gem.
Rock Island Armory M200 .38spl
$230

Parkerized with a 4" barrel. Arrived DRIPPING with grease. Cleaned her up and took her to the range. Very impressed for the money! She wont win any beauty contests, but the trigger was surprisingly smooth, most noticeably in double action. Got three inch groups at 7 1/2 yards. Seems like a good candidate for a truck gun.

Pretty sure RIA copied the lockwork of the Colt snake guns for this model. Should be around a 3.5lb single action pull when measured :D

I'm not a Colt guy. I've had a couple of single actions but this 1948 Detective Special is the first double action Colt I have ever owned. I was really surprised how nice the double action was compared to my Smiths.
From what I've read I am pretty sure the grips are not original to the gun. Don't look bad though. This one is a hodge-podge of "transitional generation" mix. Has the long grip (not D) but the short ejector rod. Has the "newer" front sight but still has checkering on the hammer and trigger. She feels very competent.

I've never had a Model 49 before. It came with some more modern S&W rubber grips on it. I borrowed the wood off of one of my 36s for the pics. I need to find some wood for her or maybe some "boot grips" but I don't think that search will be too difficult. Since I pocket carry a lot, I don't really like the idea of the 49. I get too dirty and dust and grit getting in the back would be an issue. However, as @Studentofthegun said last night, it'd make a great "desk gun".

I've had a Kit Gun before. Never a Model 63 but it's not entirely new territory for me. But what can you say about the Kit Guns that hasn't already been voiced? I love em. The 63 has already been riding with me through the woods on the golf cart for a couple of weeks.

I think I pulled off the impossible. I snatched up a nice Smith before Prosecutor had the chance to. I'll be telling my grandkids about that day when I'm old and crippled.

Anyway, on to the pics. 638-1, with box and screwdriver and cleaning brush. Didn't have the factory grips, but I may have a line on a nice pair for her.

This was a good score. Got to lay eyes on it myself...while Fielding at Firepower rubbed it in my face that I missed the deal.

What Bashman didn't mention...is that this is an uncommon revolver. Some of you may have seen my 638 (no dash). If not, I'll post it again in a few. Anyway, the 638(no dash) was a fewer than 500 run for Ellett Brothers with clear anodized aluminum frame. Made only in 1989. Well, Smith changed the front sight slightly and cranked out 1200 more as 638-1, also with the really nice looking clear anodized aluminum. Thereafter, the 638 was discontinued until 1996 when it came back on the J Magnum frame with frosted finish. So, for revolver nerds like me...this is a really neat gun. One of fewer than 1700 made with that finish, one of 1200 of its kind, and in high condition with the box. Got to keep your eyes open for these things.

I believe, at least in my county, the proper agency is CPS (Collectible Protective Services).
 
Picked up a rough looking Model 28-2 today. Mechanically 100% but a fair amount of surface freckling. Probably stored in a holster. Also, looks like somebody’s sweaty hand rested on the backstrap. This gun went straight from the parking lot where purchased to the gunsmith to be “round butted” and refinished / bead blast blued. It’s going to look great. Seriously, owned it for fewer than 20 minutes before dropping it off.

It’s not my practice to modify or refinish the classics. In fact, have never had one refinshed. But, this finish is completely jacked up. Changing the frame to round butt will look good and open up grip options.

Can't wait to see it when you get her finished up. Are you going to sell the original stocks off of that one? Looks like they could use some refinishing too...

The grips look “okay” for a shooter. A few knicks on the bottom. I’ll just toss them into the grip box. They will not go back on the round butt frame...but it’s always good to have an extra set of N Frame targets. The old school wood is worth something these days.

I just want a new Colt Cobra or a 2" or 3" K frame so bad. So much money tied up dealing with my oldest it won't happen till I sell the block and extra shotgun.

There are still deals out there if you are ALWAYS looking.

In my opinion, a shooter grade 2" K Frame, Model 10, 64, or even 15 is a better deal than the new Colt Cobra and about the same size. Actually, the Model 12 (Airweight) might be about the best damned 6 round carry revolver. But, I have a weakness for 3" K Frames. It's funny...one of the forum members texted me about a good deal on a local 3" Model 64. I saw the text while walking down the hall at my office. Tripped and fell over my desk chair trying to log in and buy the damned thing at warp speed.

Funny...yesterday I visited two other shops and a range in Greensboro. From the range to Colfax is just a couple miles but I convinced myself there'd be nothing to see there. :(

Wish I was in that position again. Unfortunately I am gonna have every penny I have, tied up in my oldest kids mental health. Planned on doing a bunch of buying but didn't realize it was a bad as it is. Hoping to dump 2 things for a wheel gun to hopefully give me some happiness at this point.

Looks like some nicely grained Goncalo Alves hiding under that old finish. An acetone bath and a couple of coats of Tru Oil and I bet they'd be real beauties. I'm a sucker for GA Target grips...

I think those rubber grips on me new 610 are real practical, but I don' like 'em... Prosecutor, do ya have a set o' chooter grips layin' around for a round butt N frame?

Next time I head yer way, I'll brang the 610 an' the 57, so we can meet at the range in Havelock.

(I might take both of 'em to the Blackberry Farm next week to do a side by side comparison o' 10mm vs 41 magnum.)

I don’t. Otherwise I’d hook you up. Until recently, N frame round butt was uncommon. Now all modern production is round butt, I believe.

In fact, I need to hunt some grips down for then this 28 comes back as a RB.
