I'm going to do something terrible and magnificent.

I've never painted an AR before.

Am I better off doing it before or after I put the thing together (upper and lower only, minus barrel, stock, handguard etc) ?

And yes, I realise this will be an abomination in the eyes of God/JMB but I just can't stop myself.

Part of me wants to be mad.

Part of me is disgusted.

Part of me is just impressed.

Make sure you work a Prince stencil onto the reciever somehow, then make sure you keep the pimp hand strong brotha.

That's not a bad idea, but I'm not a Prince fan lol

I have painted a few. You can really do it how ever you want. Anywhere from full disassembly to "just spray it"

I like to atleast remove the handguard and tape off the barrel nut. I also usually remove the mag release, bolt catch and fcg. Stuff cotton balls or q tips in the holes.

These were the most recent ones that I painted. A pistol for a friend and an m4e1 receiver for one of my rifles. This was somewhere in the range of medium effort. They turned out pretty good.

Brownells aluma-hyde is awesome.

Yes, but it's not very interesting to look at so I didn't post a picture of it.

I used the red on a chrome barrel and it did great. Used it on other stuff and it looked like crap, because I didnā€™t try the primer.

Since the barrel and buffer tube are going to be gold and the upper and lower receivers will be metallic purple I'm going to mask everything, paint it, then assemble it. More work, less chance of looking like a pigs breakfast.

I may have to wait for a bit of good weather since I don't have a garage or such to do this in.

I painted those on a piece of cardboard on top of a burn barrel. I don't think anybody would have cared if I did it on top of that car though....

We have been waiting for it to die for a long time and it just won't. My mom literally hit a COW in it. It burns almost as much oil as gas. it just keeps going.

I know how it feels.

Can we use this thread to just post pics of our oddly (or nicely) painted ARs?
Fine with me, it's going to take a bit for me to find somewhere warm to paint this. I still curse missing out on that Vaporwave AR that was on here.

If you donā€™t dress like this when you take it out and shoot it the first timeā€¦ you donā€™t have any balls

Join me on the other side, cast away the bonds of conventional wisdom and taste.

Paint and special primer got here today. Got a can of Kroil and I'm letting it soak in on the intransigent barrel nut.

As soon my crowfoot wrench gets here and I can get the barrel off I'm going to make use of the nice weather and start the paint process. It begins.

Next: stippling!
No, even I have limits.

And since I still can't get the expurgated barrel off, I'm about ready to stick this whole project in the back of the safe and forget about it. Or smash it to pieces with a hammer.

A month of buildup with nothing to show. I was looking forward to seeing how that color combo turned out.

Buy the cheap Bushy barrel @Ncvarmint listed and toss that thing in a ditch. Or wrap one end in duct tape and use it as a "tire thumper".
