Is Springfield Armory Bringing Back the Browning Hi Power

There is a lot of speculation that this is what they are doing. The presence of the lanyard ring hole might be a tell to the actual source of the raw forgings which are then being refined and CNC'd in the US so they can call it a US made pistol.

This is really the best solution then. The actual finishing and inspecting will be done by SA Inc and the heavy work is done off shore which avoids adding costs for the less skilled work.

Not like Springfield hasn’t done this before. I expected from the get going they were sourcing at least their forgings from overseas.

Rear sight looks like a 10-8, maybe not. I like those blacked out, serrated U-notches a lot.

It is funny how excited the shooting community has gotten over this announcement. I think many are tired of the almost identical polymer handguns that get introduced one after another and their is a real hunger for something distinctive and steel.
Classics never die...

I have always been a fan of metal framed guns. I only own a few polymers. G17, G19, Sphinx SDP Compact and a SDP Subcompact. I have owned a ton of others over the years but them seem to come and go out of the collection. With polymer guns I pretty much practice catch and release. I get them shoot them for a bit and then set them free to find a better more loving home. I have also bought and sold a lot of BHPs too but the best of the breed always stay. LOL

I am interested to see how long the excitement lasts. If I was placing a bet I would guess it is going to have a good 6-12 month run and then the itch will be scratched by a lot of people who were not going to pay $800+ for a stock gun and send it out for new sights, trigger job and a new thumb safety. This gun hits all of those add ons at a lower price than the FN. I don't see the avg person buying one turning into me and buying a dozen of them sending them off to 4-5 different guns smiths and taking pictures of their BHP clock. LMAO 🤣

If I were them I would run the base gun for 6-9 months and once you have one in a lot of peoples hands you can introduce a loaded version with 30 LPI machine checkering, night sight or fiber optic front, high cut grip strap and other upgrades. I don't think that you are going to see them alter the frame with a beavertail because you cannot easily CNC that. If you can keep people coming back to the trough to feed you keep adding variants ala CohenSig.

I hope they bring out a DA/SA version and give you a choice between a safety and a decocker. Maybe one version with a rail and one without. They could add some compact versions from there.

DA/SA is not going to happen. IMHO it would require a complete rework of the gun. I could see rail version and a detective but they have to sell the crap out of the standard version because I am pretty sure they are piggybacking on someone else's forgings. I want them to be successful so the price of FN base guns goes back down where it should be. If it doesn't I will consider using a SA but I have already talked to a few smiths who are not as enthusiastic as Jason Burton. The minor dimensional changes cause problems for custom builders. The reason smiths like Yost, Burton and Williams like modern Colts as base guns is that they are consistent. You know where the problems are and how to correct them. A 1980s Colt can be all over the map. The same is true with BHPs. Certain vintages make for more predictable outcomes. Oddly some of the most highly prized vintages make the worst base guns for BHPs.

One on gunbroker with over 2 days left has hit over $2k.

Just soooooooo stupid. They are going to end up paying more for that than I paid for this including the base gun and Mr. Garthwaite's work.

I shed a tear when he passed last year … a top smith on the BHP’s and 1911’s. You have a treasure there.

He was great to work with on that build. One of my greatest regrets in my gun life world is not doing his 1911 build class. I almost signed up 1 or 2 times but something always got in the way. He was 100% class. Nighthawk bought the rights to his trigger, sear and hammer and now sell them. I recommend his trigger over any other aftermarket design. The lever point is much better than stock. I have them on 4 or 5 BHPs. The one above and others from Don Williams.

I have shot the crap out of that gun. I originally intended to have it hard chromed. He told me to shoot it and make sure it was how I wanted it before the chrome job because its a PITA to make changes once the chrome is on the gun. I loved it so much I just left it. It shows wear in the bluing and scars from shooting and I love it. I will never refinish it.

The FEG Hi Power looking SA\DA was really not a Hi Power, more like a SW 39

Yes externally it looked like a BHP but internally it was a S&W.
The Columbia, S.C. HP that FN submitted to the Trials was an unbelievable Rube Goldberg contraption. When I shot it it felt fine but when The Don Carroway disassembled it and reassembled it, he looked at me and said.....This will Never pass the Military trials, no user in the field could take this apart and put it back together..Nobody!
It was an interesting BHP but damn it was complicated. When you try to make a Race Horse into a Camel...things go bad...quick.

Does the seller even have the gun in house?
Or is the "winner" going to have to wait?
Great question. Most only have what looks like stock pictures, a few of the listings do look like they actually have it from the pictures.

I want one, and bad. As time goes on my eye has shifted from the wonder polymers and more to old steel and wood. I love my carry pistols, the Glock 19, P07, LCP and so forth. But they are beloved tools. The old warhorses like the he 1911 and BHP have a soul to them that I love.

I used to think I really wanted one until a very accomplished shooter told me they were slow reloads. If I won’t have fun running a gun in a defrnsive match I just don’t think I really want it. And I don’t even shoot many matches anymore.

I was at Cabelas Ft Mill Friday. Salesman behind the counter said they didn’t expect them for a couple months.

I went to Frugal MacDougals to buy something to calm my nerves.

Shoot it a few times, enjoy it, throw it in the safe and leave it to a son. The way things are going it really only will cost you the equivalent of a few tanks of gas.

Well I’m going to I wait awhile for it to settle down. But I did the next best thing. I ordered 12ea 15 rnd mec gar hi power mags. The Clinton years I do remember. WarDawg
Smart! Mags will never go bad or for any higher demand gun lose value … especially thinking back to those $125-150 17 round Glock mags or such you bring up from the ‘94 AWB.

I’m on “The List” for one at LGS. My brother, who doesn’t really like guns, has an original in satin. I’ve been offering to buy it for years! I guess this is as close as I’ll get…..
