Just what are the rules of this forum?

I am with the crowd that thought “I’ll take it” meant just that. I’ll take it. For full asking price on sellers terms, location, payment, BOS, etc. If you want to haggle and negotiate that is to be done in pm then when you and seller reach agreement post I’ll take it per our pms. 🤷🏻‍♂️

So no rules then. I was under the assumption that an "I'll take it" and an immediate follow up PM was binding under sellers price and terms also.
I too was confused if this is the way it goes. Tell me hat I an missing......I'm Old and slow...
Larry posts...I have a gun I want to sell for this price to be picked up at this place and at this time.......I post I'll take it, PM to follow.........I am agreeing to follow All Larry's stipulations and have notified the membership through an open post.
Are Y'all saying he is under No obligation to sell to me?

But it seems we losing the common courtesy factor.
I don't think you should be bound by rule to sell it to the first I'll take it, but you should at least.show him the courtesy of negotiating with him.
Don't like what the guy has to say a simple thanks no thanks and move on.
In the early days we all brought our sense of honor with us from Canada and the next post after an I'll take it was seconds or a congratulations not another I'll take trying to knock the guy that got there ahead of you out of the deal, and some not all but some of the new people don't get that.

If a guy post and I'll take with those conditions just send a pm saying as much thank him and say since you're not willing to drive to lowes parking lot at this time I'll be moving on to the next buyer
It would take less than 5 minutes to
be courteous.
Agreed. I'm always courteous when doing business.

Yes. He may already be working out a deal by PM with another buyer that was never posted in the thread. Until he agrees to sell it to you, and you both agree on a price, terms, time and place, the deal is not done.

Edit: There are a lot of situations where a guy you never met, might not have ever seen a post on here, who is three hours away, posts that he wants to buy your gun for sale. All while you're getting a private message from your shooting buddy who you are going to see at the match on Saturday who also wants it.

Have you forgotten?

Larry moved too far away for you to meet him. :(

This is pretty much my understanding. I just had one last last week where I made an offer, seller accepted and we were messaging about a time and place to meet. I offered to come out the next day and for him to let me know when and where, I was flexible. I guess another member made an offer in the middle of this and I made an offer to match since I was the first to contact. Other member upped his offer and seller stopped responding to me. Still doesn't completely sit right with me, if I ever except and offer, I'm going to sell it to that guy no matter.

It seems to me, with these rules, we open up an auction which I thought we were against. Honestly not a huge deal for me as I really don't buy and sell a ton. No hard feelings either on the deal I described, just observations.

I would like to know who this is, as I would make sure not to ever do dealings with him. If I make an offer, and you accepted, and all we're working out is when YOU can be available for ME to meet you, and you welsh on the deal because someone offer's you more AFTER you accepted my offer, yeah, your an A-hole. Like it or not, that's how I feel. I'd have that posted in the negative feedback ASAP.

This. I'm going to make the deal that makes the most sense, not the one that caters to the desires of the first guy to say "I'll take it".

A nearby member posted a few items as a group sell, I PM'd that I'd take a couple items if he roke them up. No response, a few days later the other items were available separately. The items I wanted got sold to someone else. That's his right, it still left a bad taste. I PM'd a "what gives?" message, he apologized for missing my PM. It's all good, stuff happens.

I've listed freebie items, had someone state they'll take it, then it took a month + in logistics. Meanwhile others offer $ and an immediate pick up. 'Right to me' is the 1st one that said they wanted it gets it.
Selling a firearm, I need to feel comfortable hand in them a weapon, permit or not.

My feeling is that If I say "I'll take it" and we've worked out the details where, when, and you back out for a better offer I'll be reporting negative feedback and going to the Mods for a decision on your banning. I'm a little surprised at this attitude here that after we have an agreement that you can just take a better offer. I guess no one has read #4 in the sticky in the BST thread. I've sold a few things here I know I could have gotten more for but once we've made the deal you got it.

4. If you agree to a price, time and location, your word is your bond. Almost without exception, people acting in good faith are able to reach accommodation and achieve a positive transaction even if someone's car breaks down. HOWEVER - staff will not hesitate to take punitive measures (including temporary or permanent site ban) for not honoring your word. If you don't know what it means to keep your word, do not post in the classifieds.

To me, anyway, an “I’ll take it” in the main thread just means someone intends to try to work out the details with the seller. It isn’t a sign that the item is sold or gone. I’ve had a few items I have seen where someone posted an “I’ll take it” yet I still messages the seller with what my offer is, and it’s gone both ways.

This forum has always been fairly strict on both buyers AND sellers to not weltch on a deal once a time/place/price has been agreed on by both parties.

show me where a site owner, admin or mod ever said this was the case?

I truly don’t know how we could be more clear.

if buyer and seller agree to time, place, price and terms the deal is settled. If either party backs out, they are subject to banning or some other reasonable discipline.

Show me where I said it site owner, admin or mod ever said differently. My point was exactly that, if you make a deal don't take other offers. I think it's very clear. Unless I've read some of the post here on the subject of "I'll take it" wrong there seems to be a fine line some are trying to walk with taking other offer after agreements are made while people are trying to set up, time, place, etc.

Not trying to be a Richard here, but I’m not sure what you read that suggests that. The founders of this site and a 1000 members left another site on December 16th 2016 right after the rug got pulled out from under them. We’ve been doing business this way since I joined this crowd eight years ago.

One thing has been clear all this time, if you bust a deal, you get the wheel. Nothing suggests differently. You must have just misinterpreted it.

It seems the one thing that people get confused on is that the buyer is not the one who controls the initial phase of the deal. It’s the seller's item to sell, to whom, or not, to sell it to.

Seller posts ad.

Seller gets offers in thread, by PM, and in my case sometime a text because the member knows me. So interest and offers come in at least three different directions.

Five people can tell me they want it it. Until I work out all the particulars with a buyer and both of us agree to time and place to meet and transact, there is no deal. Only the hope of a deal.

"I’ll take it" is a strong statement of interest by a buyer, but nothing more.

Edit: unless of course the seller states that “First I’ll take it in the thread or by PM gets it, and and I’ll use date stamps to determine”. Then he has pretty much bound himself to do it that way, but he set those terms, not the forum.

So what you are basically saying is "I'll take it" means nothing and it's just a "statement of interest" I guess that's where I'm confused. So if I post something and someone says I'll take it and I take my time setting up time, place, etc, and someone else offers me more, I can just walk away from that deal and take the second higher as you call it "statement of interest?. And if as you give as an example there are five people involved I get to choose the best offer. That seems more like an auction not a BST thread. It's seems like under that premise it's in my best interest to take my time and wait and see who comes up with the best offer. That just seems plain wrong to me but if that's correct and that's way it is that's all I need to know.

In my deals over 8 years, many of which are not reflected in feedback because they never made it out of the appraisal thread, or because the buyer didn’t want to tell everyone on the world wide web, including his wife, that he just bought another gun, I usually end up selling to someone who is at least a) a known quantity with feedback, b) someone I know, c) someone close by.

I usually will sell for less to accomplish this if I have to.

Why would anyone sell to anyone else (in this extreme example) who just got here, has no feedback, and lives across the state just because they were first to say they wanted it?

OK, let's run a scenario.
You're in Huntersville, and you're selling a HiPoint thats worth $140. You bought it for $100, and post it for $130, expecting to sell it soon at a decent price for a $30 profit.

Three people say, "I'll take it."
The first guy to say "I'll take it" has no reviews, joined yesterday. Lives across the state in Waynesville. Says he is not willing to drive to Huntersville. Should you be forced to drive four hours to sell a pistol? Lose all your profit in gas, maybe even end up losing money?

The second guy lives in Raleigh. Says he will only pay you $120, but will meet you halfway. Should you take a $10 hit and drive an hour to meet the guy, if you don't take the first offer?

The third guy is your friend, you've known for years, and you're meeting him for lunch next Tuesday anyway.

Why should the seller have to sell to the first guy, or the second, just because someone said, "I'd like to buy it?" It is the sellers property, and he has the right to sell, or not sell, to whomever he wants.

Yes, when a seller says there's in the background bidding I find that unsavory. I wouldn't do it, and wouldn't trust anyone, either a seller, or a buyer, that would attempt that. But I don't think it's a good idea to limit the freedom of others to what is basically a glorified "first! " post in a YouTube comments section.

Well I guess I'm a little different even though I have sold some ammo to someone here a few times for less then I could have gotten for it because he was very close to me. But someone has to start somewhere and if they have no feedback, are new, and are a reasonable distance from me I could care less. If they have the money and they show up get what I'm selling.

I agree with all the scenario's you've given here. If a buyer doesn't meet the terms you've listed you don't have to except his "I'll take it". When I've listed things on this forum I've clearly stated that I'm only willing to drive 15 or so minutes to meet a buyer. Even though I have broken that rule and driven up to a half hour. All I was saying is if I say "I'll take it" and you except and we're working on time, and place, and you take another higher offer that just seems pretty slimy to me.

That is a crappy thing to do. If he ACCEPTED and you were working out the logistics then another member offers more and he ends up ghosting you then he should have a temporary suspension at the least IMO The key word being he ACCEPTED and you were working it out. As others have said I wouldn't want to deal with him/her/shim.

This was funny in the beginning, now its starting to be moronic.
So much willful ignorance.
This.

we aren’t 5. Jesus. This is not anyone’s first day on the forum.

Tempest in a teapot. I did a deal today with a member who is so new that his avatar is still wet. From opening to closing the deal took less than four hours with nary a hiccup.

In my just under three years here, all of my deals have gone smoothly, from smallest to largest. And I assure you that it's not because of me. :)

Mine, too.

The ones that got sideways were deals destined to fail, and they did.

Nope...I asked that exact same question back upstream. That still does Not constitute a deal. Seller can still sell to someone else. Or so seems the group take. If the seller says..I am selling This for This Price to be picked up at This Place at This time and I say I'll Take It.....It doesn't mean squat. It's still up to the seller if he wants to sell to me even though I have accepted All parameters of His deal. Still not mine.

That poster had it right, with the key word being “agreed upon”.

And Billy, I haven’t been picking on you.

Most, if not all ads lack a lot of details on required terms up front, so it invariably has to be discussed and agreed upon by both parties.

Even if you post that “you’ll take it” and agree to all terms, you don’t know that someone else PMed the seller the same thing five minutes earlier who lives down the street from him.

And this is not so odd of an occurrence.

You can’t force someone to sell to someone they don’t want to sell to.

Hence the “agreed upon”. If I put an item up for sale, and I have some reason I don’t want t to deal with a particular member, then I don’t have to. Even if they say “I’ll take it, for your price, at your location, at your time.” That is missing the key ingredient of me, the seller, saying “I agree.”

This, an I’ll take it posted publicly in the for sale thread imo should be binding to the buyer (considering a reasonable response time from the seller) however the seller should be free to sell to whomever they’d like regardless to the order of “I’ll take it” messages they have, up until they agree on a price/time/location for the transaction. Imo allowing a seller to welsh on a deal (backing out after agreeing on the above, normally cause someone comes along and offers them more) is how you end up with an auction style site.

the Seller has the same obligation as the buyer. If the criteria for a deal is agreed to, the seller and buyer are both honor bound. Accepting a higher offer after that agreement would be a banning offense.

Key word is honor and also requires integrity. A lot of folks these days have forgotten what these words mean.
