I think with the snap caps you will be able to slow down and study when/how/why you got hurt and then figure out if there is a way to avoid that. Remember the snap caps are just there to protect the firing pin; your revolver will go nowhere when you press trigger, so you can focus on your detective work without worrying about loud noise and recoil.
About ranges, I do not know where you, the state owns a few ranges which are free to use (well your taxes pay for them
