Remember When Cars Had Style?

Exactly one week after buying the 1962 Impala, I bought a 1955 Bel Air. Like this but with Keystone wheels. I was working at Kroger and had saved enough money to buy the 1962. But, a banker buddy owned the 1955 and he loaned me the money. Two weeks before, no cars. Now, 2 cars and in debt.

Cars still have style, it's just different.
Not better, not worse, just different.

I really miss the days of being able to get a daily driver for ~$500 off the side of the road at the end of someone's driveway. Style? Too poor for style. Just need something that runs at least most of the time

We had a 41 Desoto found in a barn by my dad and his buddy. I drove it into a snowbank when I was about 10… fortunately it never looked as nice as this, it was a dull green named Froggus. But it was a fun old tank of a car.

Best truck I ever owned was the 79 F-150. 300 I-6 4 speed. Paid $850 in 1996 and drove it for 7 years. Sold it for $500 because I couldn't get 3 car seats in it.

It was a huge POS and wasn't safe to drive but it ran and the tires turned

Mine was in an ‘86 bronco. 300 inline 6 Offenhauser 4BBL intake with quadrajet, full length headers, a 3 angle valve job and Chevy 1.7 rocker arms off a 250 inline…all that backed up by a c6 transmission. I think I might have hit 80 once downhill.

Style went away when chrome bumpers went away.

Nah…I mean look at the 93-95 RX7…sure the engine was a small tactical nuke waiting to go off especially if one were to try to turn the boost up, but look at it…I’m not kicking it out of the garage, especially since the stock engine can be significantly improved by the aftermarket, or LS swapped as you prefer

I have a special place in my heart (and at least one reserved in the garage) for the old in-line 6’s.
My trusty '64 Dodge when I was in college. Slant six, pushbutton auto; dead reliable and comfortable, if not exactly beautiful. I bought it for $200 and sold it for $200 when a cab driver asked me if I'd sell it. If I ever spent a nickel on maintenance I can't remember it.

You drove that regularly on 16, between Marion VA and Tazewell VA.

Didn’t you.

I did, but also made that trip with a ‘64 Galaxie 390 hardtop (three on the tree) which I drove off a mountain in TN, a worn-out 1960 T-bird (of which the less said, the better, but it did strand me once in Wytheville where I had some time to look around), and a ‘66 Morris Mini Cooper, which was great fun on 16 but otherwise like being in a metal trash can in a severe hailstorm.
