So last night I took my wife to Harris Teeter super doubles. She met a friend to get some coupons in Wake Forest on Bus 98 -when I got back on Capital Blvd, WFPD fell in behind me. I mean close behind! I signaled got in the right hand lane and continued north to Harris Teeter at Purnell and Capital. The whole time with him on my bumper. When I pulled in, got the blue lights -so I waited as he first went to passenger side -wife said what's he looking at me for? Then he came to my side and I notified of CHP and of being armed. He said he wanted to inform me my license tag cover was obstructing the tag.NOT! Then he wanted to know where I was carrying.HUH? Wanted to give a smart reply but thought better of it. He really needed to follow me almost 2 miles to tell me this? With all the crazy stuff going on on Capital Blvd on Saturday night, this is all he has to do? Anyway I held my cool, got a warning, - gee thanks! - and went on my way. I have utmost respect for law enforcement but little tolerance for harassment. He knew by the time he pulled me I had CHP -I think he just wanted to see if I would give him a problem. You don't approach a obstructed license tag stop with your hand on grip of your gun. -just saying...

You never know if they had a report of a car that was similar to yours being involved in some type of incident, and that influenced why they pulled you over.

It seems like almost every week you hear of a officer being killed somewhere in the US. Personally I'm going to cut them some slack.

Fortunately, I've only had one LEO encounter since I began carrying. My wife was rear-ended, a mile from home, by some skum bag who ran off. She called and I came running. When the Trooper arrived, the first thing I did was "advise". His reaction? "Oh, thanks for telling me but I don't care about that".

P.S. Her beloved car was a total loss.

Nobody likes getting pulled over, though, and it does seem unusual to get pulled for something that seems pretty small. But from your description, he didn't seem too aggressive, and it was a legitimate violation. Maybe it was a fishing expedition, or he was looking for someone else, but from your description, he was professional, didn't overstep his authority, and he didn't detain you any longer than necessary. Still, I understand it's never pleasant.

While it might be a crazy reason to pull you, Im not that shocked that his hand was placed on his weapon.
Though he knew you were a CHP holder before flipping on those lights, no one really knows what they are walking into / what the person has been through.
He's just being cautious.
He didnt draw down on you, no threats were made, it's all good.

If he wrote you a warning for the obstructed tag and you don't take care of the issue the next stop will sting..... BTW, you approach EVERY vehicle with your hand on the grip of your gun......If you want to survive....

Only 52 cops killed by firearms in 2018, out 650,000+ full time cops, they are more likely to die from just about anything else while on duty.

So...that’s one per week, like he said. We’re not so numb to it that we’ll just write off 52 (presumably) wrongful deaths, are we?

So by comparison since 2014 the most deaths in a single year in the Afganastan war is 55, with only 38 killed in action. So...I'm not saying that there is a "War" on police because if there truly was a war on police the numbers would be in the 1000's killed in America. That said its still not profession you don't have to think about the next shooter.

Well that's the thing tag wasn't really obstructed. It was a bogus stop. No warning written. He was fishing.

As far as his hand on his gun. He may know the owner of the car has a CHP when he runs the plates. But whose to say the owner of the car is driving it.

If he was as close as it sounds like he was, maybe it would have been an opportune time for a squirrel to run out into the road.

Bogus traffic stops. One of the reasons why I have zero use for the po po. Maybe they should, you know, go stop a crime, as we used to put it when we would see them fuzzing for traffic.

I'll also say that I guarantee they wouldn't like it if The People followed the same protocols for firearm handling as they do during an interaction.

Tag was not obstructed -perfectly readable -entire tag

I just say that because you made it sound like it had some type of cover on it. I saw a tag the other day with a dark cover on it and because of all the rain and dirt you couldn't make out the little stickers at all and the main letters were fuzzy. Just saying

What he really wanted was for you to think he was in a hurry and change lanes without signaling to get out of his way. Have had it happen to me and it seriously pissed me off.

BTW is it common to be asked where you are carrying?Never had gotten this before.
I've been asked a few times, other times not.
Even had a trooper tell me once, "It's all good, you don't go for yours and I won't go for mine."
And I think it was Atlantic Beach PD that was called when I had to report stolen porn from the hotel video system. After it was all said and done, the officer came up to my van and asked what I was carrying.
I told him and he said "Man, you don't mess around. " To this day I still wonder a bit why he thought carrying a 45acp was a big deal.

You approach every stop with your hand on the grip of your gun.

I thought NC passed a few years back you could not have anything around your plate, not even the dealership advertising holder. I know I took all of mine for a reasen. I do have CRS pretty bad though.

Sometimes they may pull up close to see if you'll rabbit. He sounds like he was looking for someone specific.
I've always been asked where the gun was. And I usually get a, just don't reach for it. One time, while driving my father's truck, I got stopped for an expired tag. I handed over my licence with my CCW card and informed that I was carrying. The officer had to take a moment to think about it. They were like, Oh, OK. Obviously, they had never had a CCW during a stop.

There are quite a few “reasons” a LEO can use to pull you over from the tag to tint. The tag thing is kinda harsh but by statutes if the plate has a holder (like dealership ads, university associations, etc) that impedes reading any part, the state name is usually it, that is an infraction and you can receive a fine. There are several LEO’s I have dealings with that will use the tag thing, tint, etc as well as following until you touch the double center line to pull late night stops ... the where you coming from and have you had anything to drink stop. I kinda see it from the DWI standpoint but it doesn’t make them look to nice. Probable cause stops do sometimes lead to arrests but itvsucks when it happens to you ... a law abiding citizen.

I will also say quite a few LEO’s run tags of vehicles in front of them more often than the general public thinks. It’s quick with the computer and does occasionally turn up violations that need to be handled.

Now the one thing I scream (and I actually did once) to my LEO friends and acquaintances is ... STOP THE IDIOTS TEXTING ON THEIR F’ING PHONES ... the response I get back is drivers fight that one saying they weren’t texting just using their phone and it’s hard to prove so it’s thrown.

This!!! And find the idiots dumping the mattresses on the side of the roads.

I would like to suggest that anyone with an NC CHP or SC CWP should have the wallet easily available while in the vehicle. If stopped if you can before the LEO even gets out of his vehicle have your window down with your left hand out the window w/ you DL & your CHP(CWP) and have your right hand on the steering wheel at 12 o’clock. It’s an easier and quick way to notify of your CHP(CWP) and then let the LEO lead from there. Honestly you’re not going to talk your way out of a ticket 99% of the time but you sure can talk yourself into one real quick ... just because they are a dick doesn’t mean you being one is in your best interest.

First of all you didn't start the conversation off correctly.
As soon as the Leo walks up to your car you need to ask" why are you hassling me pig"
Tell him not to make and sudden moves because your quicker and want him to go home safe.
Tell him you don't have time for him and just pull off. Tell him not to come after you because you will smoke his non driving ass.
Always works for me.

I'll leave that method of dealing with him to you:)

You forgot "Am I being detained!?"

My "wish" in this regard is that LEO's wouldn't succumb to the urge to make a wise-crack such as "don't shoot me, I won't shoot you" or "that's nice" or what-have-you when one reports, as required, possession of a CHP whilst carrying (the first was the reply I obtained when I arrived at the scene of my wife's accident and disclosed). I'm telling you (the LEO) in accord with the (perhaps misguided) mandate of the law; I'm not beating my chest or trying to be tacti-cool or yuk-yuk or what have you. So why make me feel like awkward or a moron? So, please, just say "thank you."

They (and there were several) all asked the "where" question.

Well, to be honest, I am willing to bet that he cares A LOT more about going home to his family than any silly "infraction" you've just committed.
