What's the "weird food" you like?

Best served live, but in a pinch:

Cottage cheese. Right outta the container, plain. Has to be full-fat and I prefer Breakstones.
I’m a Large Curd fancier…with a dusting of Lawry’s Seasoning Salt.

Stuff I grew up eating:

pig brains, eggs, hot sauce
cornbread and buttermilk, jalapenos optional
pink Nesquik sprinkled on buttered toast
Jasmine rice with grated cheese (still my go to feel good food)
pickled eggs
pickled watermelon rind
P&P loaf
maypops

I'm not even going to consider livermush, chitterlings, or any other type of sausage weird, since most of the folks I know eat all that stuff.

Not weird, but tasty.
Eastern BBQ formed into a patty, drizzled with cider vinegar, place in hot buttered pan, using a fork press extra fluid out of sauerkraut and place on patty, once patty has browned a bit, flip, press out excess moisture, place on bun with sharp cheddar cheese (Cabot), top with sriracha & habanero sauce. Nom nom nom.

Cuttlefish, Vienna sausages, sardines, squid, octopus, boudin, bear, fried heart, fried liver, fried frog legs, kimchi, brain tacos were decent. There's probably more.

I like cottage cheese with a heavy dusting of black pepper.

Not weird but funny.....
I went through the drive through Chicken Barn in Smithfield the other day - had a craving for a chicken salad sandwich and some tea (they make great chicken salad btw).
Told the lady behind the speaker my order and she said: "what bread do you want that on". I told her: "wheat". She says: "we don't have wheat". I said: "ok, what are my bread options?". She says: "white bread or toasted white bread". That cracked me up.

I am sure she was thinking.....some a-hole out here wants wheat bread. :)

There is this little restaurant In Mocksville we stop it when passing through that has “bacon jam.” I don’t know what’s in it other than real chunks of bacon and some barbecue-ish mayonnaise-ish sauce. I hate Mayo but this sauce is to die for.

I ride through Mocksville when I’m headed east to west on two wheels. I’ll have to stop in.

If the owner is there, the service is awesome. 😬

The burgers are weird but they work. Order as-is. I liked the guy when he told me I could have my burger cooked anyway I want as long as it’s medium 😂

I found it in local Harris Teeter near the bologna, never noticed it before being asked to pick some up. If you like liver, might like this!
I used to eat that at my grandmas house when I was growing up. Haven’t had it in years!

He sounds like the Henry Ford of burger flippers.

Our Bacon Jam is better than good.

They are having stuffed turkey legs at the state fair this year.
…and in case anybody wondered what you’d stuff a turkey leg with, it’s probably not anything you’d have guessed in 20+ tries.

It’s a giant smoked turkey leg stuffed with Cajun shrimp and alfredo sauce.

They’re also offering:
Or the “Que & Grits,” a scoop of chicken BBQ in a bowl of cheese grits top with more cheese and fried chicken skin.

There is also “Cornbread & Chilli funnel Cake,” a Cornbread funnel cake topped with chili and shredded cheese.

Full list here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/x7gq7uv3...=0&preview=2021+New+Foods+and+Vendors+Map.pdf

Peanut butter and banana sandwich
Dukes sandwich relish.

Vienna sausage and crackers is a staple. A must on a fishing trip.

Back when NC had quail...We'd cook them with a honey and orange juice sauce. So good.

My uncle in Oxford always had a squirrel or frog in the skillet at supper time. Cornbread, some type of greens, and always a side of chow chow.

Drop the sauerkraut and I'll eat every one of those.

I knew if I kept following this thread someone from our side in the country would post the good things we enjoyed that were considered weird by those who lived in "town".

@thrillhill will know what I'm talking about.

I figured I better stay out of this one. Food discussion in this vein tends to steer me towards social commentary and I try to derail things that ought not be derailed.

I'm gettin old and grumpy.

At least nobody has used the word "gamey” yet. That one tends to set me off.

I grew up poor & raised primarily by grandparents that were farm kids during the Depression & have eaten about everything mentioned so far. Can't say I enjoyed it all, but it filled the belly & I wasn't getting up from the table till it was gone anyway.

I'm an adventurous eater, but draw the line at liver & cottage cheese. Not a fan of organ meats either, though chorizo & the odd fried chicken liver are okay. 'Bout the only things I eat that raise some folks' eyebrows are some of the less commonly eaten game animals (coon, bobcat, turtle, etc.) & my penchant for Ghost/Scorpion/Reaper level spicy.

I see ya over there with your inside the waistband knife.
The best part about IWB knife carry?
I stopped losing them.

We’ve discussed it, compared to you I’m a country poser.
I’m sure I’m not country at all when it comes to food.
Yet I did just have smoked venison lasagna from a doe I harvested, butchered & cooked.

I appreciate what is probably meant to be a compliment in the context of this thread, but man, it ain't even like that. If you hear me bragging about being "more country" than anybody else then I'm really just bragging about being poor. You're a successful dude. Glad you're my friend.

(Still ain't no such thing as gamey though.😁)

I appreciate it, I’ve done very well for a mechanic.
You have food growing, harvesting, preparing, survival and a wide circle of friends I do not.
That’s a pretty picture of success.

I always wondered what the heck “gamey” was supposed to taste like.

Tastes like the greybeard old buck my grandfather center punched in a '78 Oldsmobile, then dressed out on the side of the road. 6 freaking months we ate on that tough old nasty MFer.

@Get Off My Lawn - liver & cottage cheese are a texture thing. 'N the smell of cooking liver? 🤮 Grandma used to make liver & onions almost weekly. She finally relented on forcing us to choke that shit down after my sister blew chunks all over the dining room table.

Take a non prime piece of venison that has been run for over 30 min by dogs in September, wasn’t field dressed until the next morning, tossed in a pan and cooked well done, eat without sauce/butter/fats.
It has a strong iron/liver flavor.
You get a just smidge of it with grass fed beef when compared to corn fed beef.
