I'm pretty sure if one is caught as a convicted felon, in the act of committing a violent crime with a firearm, his punishment is pretty severe. Not unless he/she has very deep pockets, and a very good lawyer. If someone is deemed so violent and so untrustworthy, why release them back into society? My opinion is, the law for a convicted felon is not just. The title "felon" itself is harsh for non-violent crimes. Felon, carries a certain stigma, that makes one think(murderer, rapists, and so on) ugly thoughts about someone they don't even know.To somewhat answer your question, I'll just have to say that it would be nice if the firearms laws that are currently on the books with regards to dangerous felons were actually enforced at all. As a Libertarian, I feel that if you pay your debt to society, your rights, including 2A rights should be restored.
However, and this is not a "I support the 2A but" statement, I personally feel that when a violent convicted felon is convicted of a violent crime using a firearm, then the existing laws that are on the books should be enforced and that criminal taken out of society and sent away to prison for the maximum amount of time the law allows , but that is just not happening today in our judicial system. They, the lawmakers, keep wanting to make up new laws instead of enforcing the laws we already have on the books.
You can't take a RIGHT away. It's a right, givin to us by our creator. As human beings, we have the right to defend ourselves against unjust force. Life, liberty, and freedom is protected by the Constitution. It is the supreme law of the land. Any laws written to the contrary are dangerous to its citizens. To somewhat answer your question, I'll just have to say that it would be nice if the firearms laws that are currently on the books with regards to dangerous felons were actually enforced at all. Yup, sure am. Sad but true. I did a terrible disservice to my family, my community, and myself. I didn't kill a man, nor would I ever, but seeing the comments in here. No one has faith in our justice system, no one has faith that a man can change. I never set out in life to become a felon, but I did. Even after spending time in a prison, getting released, and just talking to people around me... In this forum tonight, I see that people believe a man should be punished for the rest of his life for a sin. I'm glad that man is not God. Just remember, people make mistakes, and no one in this forum or country is perfect. I'll ask for forgiveness, and I'll pray for those who can't, and when tyrants come to take your rights away. I'll stand and fight and die beside those who'll stand up for what made this country so great. Today I just go to work, come home, to my future wife. Help take care of her and her kid, put food on the table. I just want a calm and happy life. Yet, I see people looking to wipe their ass with the very document that made this country so great. Clapping for the murder of babies. What happened to America? So yes, I want to protect myself, I want to protect my loved ones, and I'm willing to fight for America! You sound like a felon talking.
Are you a felon yourself?
Have you ever been to prison? I have, and most of the felons in prison where in there due to drug charges, drugs that are legal in some states. The violent offenders, they had life sentences. I met some murderers who had 10 years, some 20, but most, life. Prison worked for me, I had just enough time to get clean, read the Good book front to back a many a times, get set up with a job while I was in and held it till I got out. It's all up to the individual and their choices after release. Not everyone is the same, but everyone is lumped into the same category. All it's going to take is a stroke of a pen and law abiding citizens will be turned into felons overnight with these ERPOS and Red Flag Laws.I'm pretty sure you are wrong there. Our criminal Justice System nowadays is such a revolving door that the vast majority of Violent felons keep getting slapped on the wrist, let out to prey on society over and over, until they finally do something so heinous that they finally get sent away to do real time.
Most of the time, when a felon is caught again, especially using a firearm in the commission of another felony, the gun charge is one of the first bargaining chips to get plea bargained away. I did a report in school 10yrs ago, we had an 18 month stretch where every murder in our 3 county area, 30 plus murders, were committed by a felon who should have been in jail or prison the time they committed the murder, but were turned loose by judges, either let out on bond, even though they were prior felons, even while they were out on bond for another felony, or were supposed to be in prison but had their sentenced shortened , suspended or overturned by a judge.
We need to reform our criminal system, lock our felons up for long periods of time and make jails and prisons so horrible again that people don't want to go back again.
No one is denying you your right to life. We all make choices that we pay for. You have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The same as everyone. Even though you are a felon. The only difference is you can't LEGALLY own a firearm. Your pursuit of one adds some suspicion that you are reformed only to the extent of an interpretation of law. The law is that felons cannot purchase or own a firearm. Your questioning that law, like I mentioned, leads one to think that you don't respect the law and you have chosen the laws that you DO respect. Another thing. If you are a born again Christian it should be easy for you to complete a life cycle without ever needing a firearm. My question to you now is ... Why do you even want one so bad as to question a law governing it? Especially since you met many felons who probably shouldn't own as much as a letter opener.Does anyone here believe the laws being enforced against felons is a violation of ones Constitutional Rights?
What frustrates the hell out of me is that being a felon, for any reason, bars one from possessing a firearm even if a firearm was not used in the crime.
Do we strip one of their 4A rights for being a felon? No
Their 1A rights? No.
Their 5A rights? No.
Their 9A rights? No.
Etc, etc, etc. - so what makes the 2A so different?
Either one should pay their debt and be released and have all rights restored OR if they are still deemed a threat, still be locked up.
By saying they can't have a firearm, the law is simply stating they're still a threat. So why were they released?

A well regulated militia, being necessary to a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. Yet our rights are being infringed upon. It's not about just the 2A. It's about one's pursuit of life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness. Any attack on the Constitution is an attack on Freedom itself. You're questioning me like I've got some type of nefarious agenda. I live well within the Law, I don't have to like them, but I do respect them, but for you to question my moral character, and attack me on my beliefs is atrocious and an insult. I'll ask you this, why do you need a gun? Is it just for hunting, sport, or self defense? Just look back at history, and you'd understand, that Christians, of all people have been persecuted for thousands of years. It's hardly reported on, yet it happens. There's evil people in every aspect of human life, in some of the highest places of government, you know it, I know it, and more and more people are waking up to it's ugliness everyday. So yea, I feel very wronged by an unjust, unconstitutional law.No one is denying you your right to life. We all make choices that we pay for. I ask not to be snarky, but what is your goal here?A well regulated militia, being necessary to a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. Yet our rights are being infringed upon. It's not about just the 2A.(Snip)
Yes sir ... you pays yer money, and you takes yer chances. Nobody rides fer free and everyone's equal in the end.Life choices, good and bad. You make them, you harvest the results.
I'm not gonna lie. I'm ashamed of my crime, it just looks like to me, since upon my release, no one seems to have any faith in our justice system. Which is sad IMO. It seems like people have lost compation towards their fellow man. I remember being incarcerated with an ex Catawba county Sheriff, who murdered his grandmother, I remember seeing the pain in his eyes when he told me his story. It brings tears to my eyes just typing about it. This man was a good sheriff, who got drunk and made a very bad mistake. People make mistakes, and no one is perfect... None. Do I think this man will go out and murder again? No. Do I think he should be punished the rest of his life? He already is. As am I, and I'm not talking about by the law, our own conscious, and own convictions are punishing us. To those who have committed a long list of violent crimes, get a second chance and continue to do so. Are not convicted, are not convinced they've done anything wrong. They aren't real hard to spot either, even while they're in the system. They're behavior, and actions tell on them. In my experience some don't learn from their mistakes, some do.Look, I wasn't sure what answer to expect so kudos and thanks for the response.
George Carlin!!!!To me, it’s simple. If you commit a crime and are deemed untrustworthy with a firearm then you either shouldn’t be released from prison or you should be executed.
I still think we should just take one of those square shaped midwestern states, wall it all in, and make the entire state a free range prison. Toss violent offenders over the wall with a butter knife, a box of Kleenex, and a blanket. If they survive 5 years, they go free no questions asked.

Look. You come in here on your first post " fired up" about your current situation , ask people their opinion, based on hardly any background. And we don't even know you. So dont get all riled up when people give you their opinion. Muzzer doesn't know you, he's a 70 year old man with a heart of gold. He's not trying to be an ass to you personally.....so take a breath....and stop taking this so personally. You're questioning me like I've got some type of nefarious agenda. Hello Is This Legal, and welcome to the forum.
It's an antique firearm that I was looking to buy. I feel attacked already. I'm just a little riled up because, it's so easy to write someone off due to their past. I just wanted to see where people stood. When I read you guys group statement, I felt people in here would be for protecting ones rights. I see a very strong push in our country today to silence free speech, and to disarm the American people. Law enforcement officers are speaking out about it, ex law enforcement officers are speaking out about it. Sheriffs in Washington state, New Mexico are speaking out, and receiving death threats. We are living in dangerous times sir, so all I want is to make people aware. The law we all thought we lived under is not the same.Look. How about taking a little bit of time to look around, chill out....get a feel for the forum....instead of being the high strung bull in a proverbial China shop.
I looked at your profile....14ish posts on the same thing. 1 to buy a firearm. Someone mentioned the Scarlet Letter up there....you are currently letting yourself be defined by this occurence. I'd change that if I were you. That was worth what you paid for it.
Thanks, I'm not getting
