Let's drop the weight challenge

I hovered around 200, did a partial MASF fast, got down to about 192ish. Got cancer, got down to about 185. Now I am 180 or so, but exercising almost daily. Doc said that in these events the body finds a "new normal," and I might hover in between 175-180.

Weighed in early Feb at 284#

Stepped off the scale this morning at 265#.

I’m following my Don’t Be an Idiot(r) plan. Meaning, at every meal, don’t be an idiot. If you’re gonna eat a waffle, eat A waffle, not 6. And mostly just don’t eat waffles. But, if you’re gonna, don’t be an idiot.

I ran every day last year from March to about late October and ate healthier, and went down from 254lbs to 199lbs. But I was really bad from November to early March - between the cold weather, lack of exercising, huge holiday meals, getting really into cooking fairly large-portioned, high calorie stews and pies, and going back to bad eating habits, I shot back up to 218.5lbs. I've started walking 1-3 miles every day while timing myself to keep a pace of at least 3mph, with the intent to move it on up to 4mph. As of a few days ago I've gotten back down to 217lbs. I want to *at least* get back down to under 200 again, and hopefully continue down to my goal weight of 160-170lbs.

Added intermittent fasting with bulletproof coffee to my breakfast rotation. Fasting about 3 times a week. Usually have my last food intact about 4-4:30 am and eat dinner about 7-8 pm. I have not noticed any significant weight loss. But I feel better. And yes, my schedule is seriously jacked up.

Tinkering with MCT oil again, in the bulletproof coffee and in my regular coffee. Verdict is out on that so far but I had some in the cabinet anyway so might as well use it. Was listening to a Dr that claims MCT oil can help kick off ketones in the blood without having to get into a low carb induced ketosis. And the ketones change the bodies reaction to calories in general. Podcast was The Genius Life 220 if anyone is interested. I lost more than usual over a couple days, but nothing consistent.

Still staying low carb on work days. Split days off and both are kinda cheat days. I just don't care what I eat. If I got serious I could loose some more. But I'm just not that motivated. I can gain and loose 6 lbs between days off just eating crazy on a day off and tightening up on work days.

I was 189 this morning. If I had a goal it would be 185. But being this close it's hard to seriously tighten up and care about the last couple pounds. I tighten up pretty hard if I hit over 195.

Are you drinking the bulletproof coffee in your feeding window? Cause I thought anything with calories would break your fast. Been thinking about trying IF again, but cannot seem to let go of my morning cup a Joe.

I did Nutrisystem over January, February and lost 18 lbs with little to no exercise. In March the family switched to Home Chief for 4 meals a week.

Breakfast/Lunch
32 oz of coffee each morning, and take MOLK protein shakes as my lunch.

Been keeping the weight on a even.

I like Nutrisystem because it helps me with portion size. As a example, now I eat 1/2 as much for dinner and that is a great start. I will keep on this low exercise plan until I get below 310 lbs. Once I hit that number 8lbds to go, I will step up my walking and such.

Yes. That said, I generally tinker with things to see how it works for me. But the bulletproof coffee works in conjunction with the fasting. Instead of me screwing it up check out The Genius Life 195 where he interviews the guy that started bulletproof coffee. Basically the lack of food plus adding caffeine and fats in butter and/or MCT oil kick start a process in the body to lower inflammation and a few other things. It can also cause a spike in muscle production shortly after you break the fast.

I usually have my BP coffee as soon as I get up. At work I have either a Kombucha drink or a homemade apple cider vinegar drink, both about 16 oz. And a bit later I have a Jocko Go, healthier energy drinks that's keto.

Time frame is roughly coffee at noon, and I drink a lot of it. I add a scoop of bullet proof creamer, a tablespoon or so of MCT oil, and 1/4 tsp Turmeric. About 4 I break out the kombucha/AC vinegar drinks. Then about 6 I'm into the Jocko Go. About 7-8 I'm eating dinner.

Usually between 5-6 I can start to feel things working. Soreness/muscle pain reduces, I usually get a little chilled, and just an overall good feeling. And generally somewhere between 4-6 I'll get a little hungry but that usually goes away drinking the energy drink. BTW, don't let "energy drink" fool you. It's 15 calories, no sugar, 2g carbs, 95 mg caffeine and a bunch of vitamins.

All that said, if I pushed it without the extra drinks there is a good chance it would ramp up the effects. Although Kombucha and AC vinegar do similar things to fasting and ketones so I could be wrong.

Do you buy it or DIY? I make my own version: in one cup of coffee, one spoonful butter, one spoonful coconut oil, one spoonful cocoa powder. It really keeps my hunger down through the morning, and it gives me energy.

I make mine. I mix a scoop of Bulletproof hazelnut creamer and maybe 1-2 Tbs MCT oil and 1/4 tsp turmeric in half a pot of coffee. I was also using butter but wanted to cut back on my intake of calories. Once I started using the creamer is has MCT and butter in it anyway.

On non fasting days I add 1 scoop vanilla protein powder, i scoop cocoa powder, 1/4 tsp turmeric, 1 tbs MCT oil, and a squirt of hazelnut syrup.

Down 41lbs so far from late January 2022. Intermittent fasting-ish with keto-ish. I’m not stressing about some fries here or there, the carbs from the sauce on chicken and broccoli, etc. Just eating less mostly. Meat and veggies. No supplements except vitamins.

Joined a gym yesterday, been years since I’ve been in one. Felt good to be back, something to look forward to. Still a longgggg way to go but hey, progress

You are outworking everyone laying on a couch.....

Good for you! I support the not stressing/no denial plan. Life is too short to not enjoy food. 41# in 3 months is freaking awesome and legit.

By all that is holy can someone suggest a diet plan for someone with no consistent schedule and little prep time? I have got to shed some lard but everything I've looked at seems to assume you're a full time stay at home cook.

When I was single I hated to cook, and needed to drop about 65 pounds so I could join the Navy. I bought canned tuna for my protein. I would cook/grill hamburger, too, and occasionally chicken, but I ate a metric crap-ton of canned tuna.

Proteins: canned tuna, deli meats, cheese, hummus.

Carbs: frozen and canned veggies, beans/legumes, oats (steel cut or long-cook oats, not instant oatmeal).

Fruit: whatever I wanted.

No-no's: breads, pastas, candy, ice cream, cereal. Beer/booze is also 'bad' (beer has carbs, booze has sugars), but I had them anyway.

Drink water. No sports drinks, no electrolytes, nothing but water (or black coffee).

You need to read labels enough to restrict your calories. I ate about 1,200-1,500/day, and exercised 30 min-1 hour a day.

Edited to add, if you want to lose weight fast(er), go on a high protein/low or no carb diet. There are plenty of online resources on how to do that. The more complicated your diet, the harder it is to plan for and stay on. My plan above is what worked for me, and is the 'common sense' approach of limiting bad calories/bad carbs, upping protein, and exercising to ensure a calorie deficit. I lost 65 pounds or so in about 8 months.

Yeah I got a treadmill off here so the exercise has been more of a thing. That doesn't sound too bad, all portable for work and easy. Boring as hell, but it's not like I'm eating gourmet right now. Too expensive.

Simple works. If you want to shred the boredom, use a lot of spices and grill some of the proteins.

I was a paramedic so I also needed portable. I chose to not eat out. I did, occasionally, and would get something like grilled chicken, etc.

Of course I would finally get motivated when protein prices shoot through the roof.

I'm back down about 10 lbs, another 10 to go. Trying to walk every day at least a couple miles. Working from home makes that a little bit tougher. I was 191 in March and weighed in at 181.x last friday.
I need to lose the weight for my knee at the least, the busted one hurts still and the "good" one isn't much better.

I lost 65 lbs originally without any exercise... Semi Strict Keto.

I almost never eat fast food, however, I am a sucker for soil food and BBQ. Done right you can squeeze those in.
I haven't had a single soft drink since 2008.

The weight loss helped my knees, lower back and hips.

I was 198ish (+/-) before cancer, then cancer and with the feeding tube, radiation, etc., I got as low as 170, now I am hovering in the mid-170s. I like this weight. I am also exercising a helluva lot more, too. I still have some love handles but otherwise feel very good. But please: NO one get cancer as a weight-loss strategy. 0/5 stars, do not recommend.

I’m now down about 60 since October. It has slowed down a lot however. Keto/low carb shed the first 40 in a flash. Now it’s a slogging match. I desperately need to add exercise into the equation. Back before Covid I was working out at least 1-2 hours per day in the gym at work. But now with being at home and the kids at 4 different schools I spend a stupid amount of time sitting in car lines.

I dunno, would save me having to shave my head all the time....

The previous responses on the specific diet and recommendations was great, but I’ll add something a bit different.

Even when doing a diet it’s 90% about changing your relationship with food. For me, food was a comfort item, whether I knew it or not. I would eat when I was happy to celebrate, eat when I was sad to make me feel better. I would eat whenever I stopped for gas because I “needed a snack”. And I would eat at my desk at work to “give me something to do while I worked”.

So, a lot of it is mental. I now avoid snacks during the day, and I don’t miss them. I’ve replaced candy bars and cakes from the gas station with a beef jerky stick (or nothing…magically, I can buy gas without going inside for a snack).

My lifestyle also has me engaged in “food events” a lot…birthdays, church functions, fundraisers…so I have had to change my mindset and become far more disciplined about not giving in and getting the stuff I really want, and limiting the portion size of what I do get.

So, bottom line is, a diet will only get you so far. You have to change your relationship with how you consume.

And as a disclaimer: I am still working on changing my relationship with food. I haven’t “arrived” yet. I just know that if I go back to how I used to treat food I’ll be back at 300 within a few months.

As are we all, brother....

Yes, absolutely figuring out the relationship, triggers, friction points, etc., are a key part of the journey. Related to if you don't like it you aren't going to do it. Before cancer I would snack a lot more, especially watching TV. I still do it, some, but because of ongoing complications the actual amount I can eat is a mere fraction of what it was, and I get fuller, faster.

Absolutely.

I'm pretty sure I've already posted it earlier in this thread, but many people make "diet" far more complicated than it should be and as a result it gets them into trouble with keeping on it.

Whatever one does with "diet" it should really amount to this: BALANCED and REASONABLE portions.

If you deprive your body of what it needs by not eating a balanced diet, it will automatically develop cravings because of it. It's your body telling you that you need to eat more in order to get what it needs.

So our diet must be balanced nutritionally. That's not just a calorie thing...it's proteins, carbs, vitamins, etc.

"Reasonable portions" means what you really need to get through the day. Much of what we consume these days is actually geared towards making you MORE hungry. A balanced diet will help with this. But setting out with a simple personal directive to eat "one plate with reasonable portions" is one way of limiting yourself. Stop eating until you're stuffed.

And finally, the bit about "exercise". As long as you're physically active (moving about, doing some kind of work, walking, whatever), your body doesn't feel hunger. You feel hunger when you slow down and rest.

Exercise to burn calories is good...but for hunger control, all you really need is to be active. So changing your physical activities to accomplish this is important. Walk more. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Do some yard work. Get involved in some project that keeps you on your feet instead of on your keister. That kind of thing.

Balanced diet, reasonable portions, physically active.

Im in.

I recently started a diet plan, Optavia (I think I spelled it correctly).
Honestly, now Im doing it, and I plan to continue, I think I'll stop in August and can continue without buying their specific food Its about small portions OFTEN, every couple hours.
It's a 1.3oz snack bar every three hours and then one 'big' meal a day of lean meats and a few veggies. Low fat, low caloric intake.
And LOTS of water. I drank a lot before, now Im trying to get 100oz a day (PLUS the 30oz hot tea each morning or coffee).
I usually have 65 or so oz before 1p each day, then continue drinking throughout. Im pissing water over here.

Without a change to my exercise/fitness routine...which is none, basically, Im dropping a few pounds a week. And Im messing up. Ive got to get more dedicated and up my fitness.
It's been two weeks, give or take, and Im down about 6lbs. Im hoping to lose a total of 20+ by Aug 6th.

I dont have any pictures of before. And, likely, wont take any anytime soon. But what I might do is use a vest that Ive had for a few years that's new-with-tags that I want to wear/use...take pics as time goes of how close those buttons get. And, eventually, me wearing it.

Im freaking in, gents. Im going to drop the weight.

Also, this diet Ive started: my parents are doing it, as well as some family friends. They've all had great success with it. Father is down over 30lbs in two months and really looking better already. Im stoked for him. Ive just got to get the mental and planning bits down, planning will be easier as my schedule is about to free the heck up.

Keep it up brother! Weight loss is tough!

@HMP well done. You are already more successful than people who are doing nothing.

Exercise, any exercise, will ramp up the weight loss. But weight loss happens in the kitchen and not in the gym.

Calories matter, and not all calories are the same. You're learning that now.

Keep it up!

Im keeping track of my weight about once a week or so. Have been for a while. It was trending, slightly, upward and then started coming off quicker than it went on. Feels good.
But then my parents took us out to Ryans Steakhouse (not the buffet, the nice place in WS) and I just HAD to get the banana pudding cake ha

Im trying to slim up for me. But, also, I want to look decent in the wedding pictures. That's for me AND HER. I want her to be extra stoked to show me off. I know she loves me to/till death, but I want her to be MORE stoked.
And I heard your dong looks bigger when you drop a lot of weight lol

Way to go, @HMP ! Dieting with others seems to help keep you motivated. My wife and I are still doing WW, and her participation with mine has kept both of us in the game. I’m down 40# since January, and loving it.

Thats awesome progress!!!

It’s a little at a time now, about a pound every two weeks. Just enough to keep me motivated and stay away from fast food 😀. Keep up the good work! When I look at my wedding photos (five years ago), I don’t want to be that big ever again!

While I dont get "on" facebook anymore, I like when I get a notification of, "Youve got memories..."
I like to look and see the old times. And sometimes I dont like it. I know a beard hides some fat, but I saw a pic from a decade ago and I was sad that these 'memories' had such a plump version of me.
I dont want to think that about my wedding album.

My diet is similar, 85/15. I eat well 85% of the time so I can eat what I want and drink booze and beer 15% of the time.

Right now the trismus/lockjaw is it limiting factor in how much I can eat and what I can eat, never recommend this for anyone to lose weight, but it sure has helped me.

I'm back on the train again, basically low carb and zero sugar but my eating habits have also changed. At the Dr. in March I weighed in at 191 which is the heaviest I have been since 2005. I weighed in this morning at 176.5. I have a follow up in July and I hope to be about 170.

I've not been exercising lately and I can feel it. Our son is in the hospital and I suspect he will be released next week so I can start walking again.

Gah! Way to bury the lead. Hope all is well for your son!

I gained a bunch of weight back, myself. At 5' 9", I don't need to be pushing 200.

Last weekend, I made the decision to jump back on the healthy weight wagon. I didn't weigh myself then, but yesterday I stepped in the scales at 199.6 pounds. So I had to have been just over that. I'm 198.4 today.

I'm not on high blood pressure meds, but my blood pressure last week was 150/90. And that was the SECOND measurement... the first was 170 over something.

I know high blood pressure is wicked evil, and I also know that bringing my weight down a fat 40 pounds will do me a world of good. So many of our health issues as a society can be traced to excessive weight, something that's entirely within our power to control.

Anyway, I'm looking to be in the 160s by July. I'll post as I get there.

Things are looking up, hopeful he will be home next week. Thank you for the well wishes. I'm just tired of running... Job, home electrical issues, hospital round trip is 50 miles, twice a day for a month.

I'm eating right, the weight loss isn't because I'm not taking care of myself.
