Snowmageddon 2017

The weather guessers blew this one big time. Instead of East and South of US-1 getting the brunt of it, it's North and West.

Eastern Wake County: So I just went for a drive around the way to see what's up. Roads aren't BAD, but there were enough people acting like complete foolish morons that I came back home. Jeep passes a van on a double yellow, alllmost loses it going back into his lane. 1/4 mile further up, guy in a VW doing doughnuts in the intersection, which I think were unintentional. I think he was trying to use more skinny pedal to try and get more traction, and that never works.

It's warm enough right now that traction isn't too much of a problem (even my my FWD wagon) but once it cools down a bit more this evening, it's gonna be pretty nasty.

Some of the roads have been scraped, but it doesn't look like they're salting them at all, which might be a good decision, time will tell.

Which is why I said "weather guessers"...

95 to garner on 40 is slicker than owl sh#% a solid sheet of ice. Just in that short distance I pulled 3 out of the ditch

That's what happens when you dump a hundred tons of salt on the road before several inches of rain... Then it snows/sleets...

So, being a person who grew up in the north and still has a 4x4 pickup and has lived here for 15+ years.... I sat home today.

Here's the thing: It almost never rained inches at a time before it sleeted and snowed up north. Ice is ice. Maybe we will thaw out Tuesday.
Snow doesn't scare me... An inch of ice under snow does...

Well made it home. 240 miles 8 hours. And pulled 6 people from the ditch on the way. Otherwise uneventful. Got stuck behind 4 motor graders on 40 between Raleigh and Chapel Hill. Running 7 mph. Lined up like 4 combines cutting wheat and all they were doing was making a mess of it. I'm sure that is nothing but a sheet of ice now.

Speaking of ice, my old neighborhood exits onto a main road at a light and there is an incline to climb into the intersection when the light turns green.

It took me three cycles of the light to pull into the main road due to wet ice. Finally had to put it in 4WD Low.

Well it's 6am, my daughter slept here last night and I have to drive her to the hospital for work.
So, wish me well, I almost fell to my death just walking out to start the truck (glad I plugged it in).

That Couple of inches in my last post turned into nearly 7 here in Leicester. Below is a post I made on another board with folks from around the country. There was some talk about how we Southerners are a bit unaccustomed to snow.

"9 degrees here in WNC this morning 01/08/17. Single digits is not so common so it is very cold to us. That's WAY cold for this part of the country. 2500/3000 elevation. Its a bit colder higher up. I live below the ridge so that cold drops down as well as the wind that comes with it. The snow has not melted much. What the sun melted yesterday morning, is now sheets of ice on roadways and other transportation areas. It will be wednesday before we can get out. I watched 4WD trucks spinning and twisting to get up the blacktop road behind our house yesterday. A couple folks made it out of this neighborhood yesterday morning. Its a gravel road. There was a short window of opportunity between the quick thaw and the quick freeze again late day yesterday. Pete is right, This weather would be nothing for folks in the high Sierras. As well as others who have a few months of this stuff. But for us it is a few weeks, with a break in between in Jan and Feb. Everyone here in the rural areas just hunkers downs and waits it out. Now in the city, just 15 min away, its all clear with plows and brine trucks keeping everything moving. Local entrepreneurs with 4wd and a mini plow keep driveways clear. Some folks on the close in mountains sometimes get snowed in. At a friends house the main 2 lane road is clear but he cannot get up his steep incline driveway. Some people will park near where the road is plowed and sled down to the vehicles. Its the sled back up that is a PITA. I think if it was just snow things would be better. But with the daily melt and refreezing by mid afternoon, it gets a bit tricky even for those with snow tires and all wheel drive. Its like driving on marshmallows sitting on a sheet of ice, that's floating on jello".

Nothing here in Lake Normanopolis but it's only 2pm with temp at 43deg. Yesterday I went out and filled up the tank in the truck and got 5gal of diesel. I should be set.

We have a full freezer of ham, brats and leftovers. Forgot the propane! Dang it!!

BRB...

Finally have all the snow off surfaces that we walk on. I was kind of disappointed with the hype vs the actual snowfall. I'm sure those of you who got dumped upon are thinking otherwise.

The cold is supposed to go away in the next day and with it, the snow. Oh well, I can always hope for another storm before the spring!

Don't ban me...

WS roads are pretty good today at noon
Some side roads are so-so, but main ones are good to go

Same for north davidson co.

SE guilford county side roads are pretty slick around here today just pushed a neighbor out little bit ago and the snow that had been packed down was froze solid and ice now and not likely to get better very fast as cold as the ground is and these air temps.

Anyone been out on the roads around the West Clayton side?
Barber Mill Road/42/Guy Rd??
Road conditions ?
Lots of those side roads are spotty. I have been out and about today and the shady places are still ice.

Edges of steep driveway visible; rest still covered. Friend made it to the bottom of my driveway in a FrontWD Honda sedan, the only vehicle up our road since FRIDAY (which was me).

Plenty of food, water, propane, wood, etc., on hand.

BUT I'M DOWN TO THREE BEERS.

Wish me luck.

Yep. That would be a problem. I'm been putting 'em away like a fat kid with a sack of potato chips.

Emergency measures may have to be introduced.

Road in front of the house is still slick. I'm told that 62 in Climax is clear. After spending 2-3 hours today on a ladder clearing ice off the leaf guards on the gutters, I think I'll be working from home tomorrow.

Not much at my place

No problems here at all. The 4runner loves snow. Never been stuck. Had it in snow to the bottom of the doors one time in Yankee land chasing big deer.

It was either last winter or the one before we got A LOT of really wet snow that then partially froze into thick slush. I took our 4Runner out and while it made it through, I thought it was going to get stuck. Took the same route with my truck next and it did much better. Both were in 4WD mode.

The weather yesterday was awsome and all that snow is now gone.

I couldn't be happier, exactly why I don't have a shovel. The snow was here for what, 2 days?
